Andros Townsend leaves England squad to sort Sporting Lisbon transfer – Reports

Andros Townsend has left the England squad to sort a transfer to Sporting Lisbon according to reports this morning.

Disastrous news if true, as the winger was easily Newcastle’s best player in the final few months of the season and somebody who would clearly have been a dominant figure in the Championship.

However, a series of postings on social media on Monday claimed Andros Townsend was en route to Lisbon.

Tuesday morning saw front page headlines in Record, a sports newspaper published in Lisbon, which claim that Andros Townsend is signing for Sporting Lisbon after they decided to activate the £8m clause in Townsend’s Newcastle contract (they also claim that West Brom’s (on-loan midfielder from QPR) Sandro is also going to sign for  Sporting Lisbon).

The departure from the England squad is reported to be only temporary with the player ironically travelling back to the north east, in preparation for England’s match with Australia at the Stadium of Light.

Fingers crossed this potential transfer doesn’t happen and a few issues surround the story.

You would have hoped that Andros Townsend would have been prepared to give it at least one season, especially with him saying how much he owes to Newcastle and the fans for his place in the England squad.

Also, I find it strange that Premier League clubs aren’t queuing up for the winger after his late season form, although one thing that Sporting Lisbon can offer is Champions League football after finishing runners-up in the domestic league.
