Signing off at Coventry City, Adam Armstrong says ‘I’d like to test myself at a higher level..’.

How quickly that happens in a Newcastle shirt is very likely to depend on how the relegation battle sorts itself out in these last 10 days of the Premier League season.

No matter whether it is Rafa Benitez or any other manager, if Newcastle end up in the Championship then surely it will be St James Park where Adam Armstrong will be trying to take his chance.

The Geordie striker when asked about his next step simply said ‘I’ll be back at Newcastle and see where that takes me’.

When Rafa Benitez was appointed at Newcastle, Adam Armstrong made it his business to go to the training ground when visiting family on Tyneside, and ask for a chat with the new manager to see where he saw the young striker fitting into his plans.

At this week’s official awards ceremony at Coventry City, the 19 year old picked up three honours – goal of the season, young player of the season and top goalscorer.

Asked if he had expected this season’s achievements, Adam Armstrong said:

“Definitely not. I know I have got the talent to be the best I can be and to get 19 goals will hopefully push me on in my career.

“I’d like to test myself at a higher level, coming to League One I didn’t know what to expect and I am delighted with how well it has gone and now I’m raring to go.

“I’ll be back at Newcastle and see where that takes me.

“The staff and manager have been brilliant. Tony Mowbray has been a major influence and helped me out a lot and I have nothing but high praise for him and his staff – I’ll certainly be looking out for Coventry’s results in the future

“I have had some nice messages from Newcastle fans and the Coventry fans have been brilliant to me all season. It’s an amazing feeling to be on the pitch and the fans singing your name, and the awards are a perfect way to end my season.

“Going on loan I didn’t know what to expect so to get three awards has been massive for me, I’d like to thank everyone who stood by me, my family who came to every game, my girlfriend and her parents – they have all supported me really well.”
