After the shock to the system 5-1 win over Tottenham, three Newcastle players have made the official Premier League team of the week (see full team below for matchday 38).
Quite where that performance came from is anybody’s guess but it left a bittersweet feeling for the Newcastle fans watching.
The three to make this Premier League team of the week were all goalscorers on Sunday and are a trio of players where it is in the balance as to whether they will still be at Newcastle in August.
Daryl Janmaat scored the final goal against Tottenham to help him into this team of the week and certainly he is one who most United supporters believe will leave.
Two goal Gini Wijnaldum scored twice to take his final tally to 11 as top scorer at Newcastle this past season, a player who is a total enigma as despite his goals he has bee totally anonymous in so many games.
Aleksandar Mitrovic didn’t see out the game thanks to his daft red card but he still makes this team thanks mainly to an assist for Wijnaldum’s opener and his own excellent headed goal.
The Serbian has said he wants to be still here for the Championship and whilst he still has his ‘rough’ edges, he is one of the few players you tend to believe when he says it.
EA Sports Player Performer Index (PPI) is the official Premier League system using a comprehensive range of statistics to provide objective analysis as to which players are playing the best and why.
The EA Sports performance index uses six different criteria:
Winning – points are awarded for time on the pitch in a team that wins.
Player performance – points go to those who have a positive influence on a winning performance (shots on target, tackles, clearances, saves etc) while points are taken off for negatives such as shots off target or red/yellow cards.
Time on pitch – the longer a player is on the pitch the more points awarded.
Goals scored – self-explanatory.
Assists – credit for whoever on the scoring team last touches the ball on the before the scorer.
Clean sheet– the whole team is given credit for this but points are allocated by position in the team, so goalkeeper gets biggest share, then defenders and so on.
