Here is the Newcastle team v Southampton that can get United back on the long road to survival.
With only seven games to go and six points (and a worse goal difference) off fourth bottom, brave decisions are called for.
As Rob Lee has said in the media, there’s no point hoping to rely on the defending to keep Newcastle in the Premier League.
So to me it is essential to have the three players on the pitch who have scored 23 of 30 goals scored by Newcastle players this season (one other was an own goal).
Mitrovic (8 goals), Wijnaldum (9) and Perez (6) must all start, whilst Townsend and Shelvey are also obvious choices to help create/score the essential goals, with Siem de Jong then making up the front six and surely now deserving his chance.
At the back it is really difficult as nobody has impressed.
Obviously Darlow will be in goal and whilst neither Janmaat or Mbemba were great at Norwich, they must both also play.
Coloccini is back in training and if fit, I would bring him in alongside Mbemba, even though the Captain has been poor for most of the season – neither Taylor or Lascelles have looked the part in recent weeks.
Making up the back four, I’m no fan of Moussa Sissoko but with no obvious alternative, I thought he again did ok when asked to play at left-back later on at Norwich and certainly we surely can’t risk having Vurnon Anita anywhere on the pitch again, after his latest dismal display at Carrow Road.
