Southampton 3 Newcastle 1  Saturday 9 April 3pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle, to talk about some aspect of the match:

Jamie Smith:

“Tell the fat lady, she’s on in five.”

Nat Seaton:

“Well, that’s my last away game in the premier league for what I fear will be quite a long time.

“Nothing suggested today that we are going to scrap our way out of it.

“The players’ response to Rafa is very disappointing , I’m gutted.”

Ben Cooper:

“Well I didn’t expect anything and didn’t get anything for my trouble.

“Saturday is win or bust now.

“At the end today we at least looked like we were trying but apart from Townsend, no one deserves their place next week.

“Time for the manager to show his quality and somehow pick 11 players who can win a game.

“Good luck to him.”

Paul Lyon:

“You can’t start a game like that and expect to get anything from it. Time after time we give ourselves a mountain to climb.

“Players have yet to take any responsibility – any pride in wearing the shirt, nor have they even displayed an ounce of professional pride for far too long now.

“Though we may be used to NUFC losing week in week out it still hurts all the same.”

James Rutherford:

“Dismal yet again.

“How is Steven Taylor still under contract at Newcastle? The guy has lived off being a Geordie.

“The “defending” for Shane Long’s opener was more reminiscent of a dog chasing its own tail.

“Only saving grace is that Norwich lost. Lose next week and it definitely is curtains.”

Leazes Park Ender:

“For context, Southampton away is a very tough game.

“However, that was still inept from those Newcastle players.

“The most spineless Newcastle team since the club was formed in 1892. Part of me can’t wait to be shot of this lot.

Mr Ashley is culpable too. He paid peanuts for idiots to run his club.

“He should sell up. He should source a credible buyer who meets the asking price and agree he gets his £129m loan back in instalments.”

Jamie Swan

“Safe journey home to all who made the journey.

“Team don’t deserve that level of support.

“Didn’t fancy our chances pre-match, fancied it less after 2 mins.

Just yet another weak as pi** performance to add to the monumental pile of similar showings.

“Nowt changed.

“Over and oot.”

Notts Toon:

“Utter sh*t.”
