Newcastle keeper Rob Elliot has now revealed that he will after all be going to France this summer for the Euros.

However, sadly it will be only as a fan.

Injury against Slovakia has ruled out both the rest of Newcastle’s season and the Irish campaign ths summer but he has buried his own personal disappointment.

Rob Elliot had a load of mates going to support him and his international team-mates and now he will travel with them as a fan, rather than as a participant.

You can say all you want about money but it is tragic for any sportsman to miss out on opportuniteies such as this – with the reality being that surely this was the Newcastle’s player’s best chance of competing in a major competition.

Rob Elliot speaking to Radio 5 Live:

“All my friends were going to the Italy game to see me – now I am going with them and hopefully we will see the lads progress.

Ireland play Sweden and then Belgium, before the final group match against Italy on 22 June.

Rob Elliot also spoke about Rafa Benitez and says he is ‘confident he will keep us up’.

Elliot is impressed with Rafa’s attention to detail and says he was ‘straight down to business’.

I have no doubt about the quality of Rafa Benitez’ management skills but Rob Elliot also insists that the ‘quality is there’ in the playing squad.

They had better start showing it as from this afternoon then…

Rob Elliot:

“Rafa Benitez has been brilliant and his attention to detail is one of the things he has carried over during his career.

“Not having long to work with us, he has been straight down to business.

“I am confident he will keep up us up the players, the quality is there.”
