After watching the latest shambles unfold, Rafa Benitez didn’t hold back when discussing his team.
The Newcastle boss said it was clear ‘…we can say nothing to our fans’ after Southampton strolled to a 3-1 win and another defeat that takes United a further step nearer the drop.
Rafa Benitez said that the minimum Newcastle fans, or indeed any supporters, should expect is the team to fight and have ‘character, passion, positive play…for 90 minutes’.
Whilst the players improved slightly in the last half hour it still wasn’t great and as for the hour that had passed before that…
Rafa has asked the Newcastle fans to simply show blind faith in the absence of any encouragement from the team itself.
Benitez saying that the only hope against Swansea is if the supporters help get a win that would give Newcastle a potential slim lifeline.
The United Manager has also indicated that he will make changes to try and address the especially poor form away from home – as to what he can come up with from this squad is anybody’s guess.
“It is very clear that we can say nothing to our fans, they come here (Southampton) to see the team fighting and winning and we didn’t do that in the first half – so you have to understand their feelings.
“But we will need the support from the fans, we need them behind us to drive us on and help to get a result against Swansea.
“Character, passion, positive play…that is the very least of what is expected every game, for 90 minutes, but it’s clear that this was very much lacking in the first half.
“That’s not a situation that we can have away from home, so we have to make changes to how we will play away from home.
“Before that (Liverpool away) we’ll have to prepare for the next home game (Swansea then Man City) and just hope we can keep the fans behind us.”
