Newcastle 3 Swansea 0  Saturday 16 April 3pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle, to talk about some aspect of the match:

Nat Seaton:

“Keep Rafa’s taxi on hold, it aint over yet.

“Wish we could be playing teams who have nothing to play for every week!

“Slim hope restored and more importantly I’m smiling for once after a game…”

Jamie Smith:

“Essential 3 points and some welcome fight shown to boot.

“Anyone disappointed that the mackems won is wrong, as we suddenly find ourselves a win away from jumping over the relegation line.

“I have to be the miserable git who points out that Swansea were there for the taking and perfect opponents for our position.

“Man City will not be so accommodating, but we need that first win against them in eleven years to give ourselves a fighting chance. On to Tuesday night….”

George Stainsby

“Hope. It’s a fine little word, like beer.”

Paul Lyon:

“Shaky 1st half which brought a goal that half the ground hadn’t realised had went in – who cares!

“Finally saw glimpses of what this team are capable of – and that’s down to Rafa.

“NUFC – we’re not dead yet!”

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“Tiote, Townsend and Lascelles all superb.

“They missed a couple of sitters but we were due some luck.

“Now to build on this on Tuesday.

Mitro must start.”

James Rutherford:

“Must win game won.

“Huge performance. Even Moussa Sissoko turned up for the first time in a while. He was even a contender for man of the match!

“Great to finally see a back four only wanting to defend. At no point in the game was either full back bombing forward, and they actually defended as a unit.

“We’ve given ourselves a chance now, and we could really lay down a marker with a result against Champions League semi finalists Manchester City…

“Happy birthday Rafa!”

Leazes Park Ender:

“A small chance of remaining in the Premier League now exists. It was a must win and we did.

“We’ll need more of that, and a bit more rub of the green.

“There are twists left in this struggle yet.”

Jamie Swan

“Well what the hell do I know?

“Saw the team sheet and my jaw dropped agog.

“Rafa obviously sent a team out hopefully not so feeble as to buckle after 3 mins again and give us a chance to play our way in and get some confidence and a foot on the ball.

“I would still personally pick Mitro in my team but Cisse played ok.

“Lascelles is raw but the type of character we need in comparison to ‘Captain’ Colo.

“Still hanging off Premier League rock with one hand tied behind our backs and there’s a coven of Mackems at the top throwing rocks off our bonces – but we are still dangling.

“We can but trust in Rafa – he knows what he’s doing! Happy birthday amigo!!”

Notts Toon:

“Happy to be proved wrong today.

“Although there were still plenty of nervous moments I thought the defence looked solid, and Townsend was a handful for the whole match.

“Cisse’s movement occupied the defenders and softened them up ready for Mitro to bully them at the end.

“They will need to be better to get anything on Tuesday, but at least there’s hope now.”
