In a season which has provided very few positives, Andros Townsend is at least one player who has shown an ability to take matters into his own hands and put the ball into the net.
The January signing has put in two goals for Newcastle since his arrival. While that total certainly isn’t elite, both goals have come in a style that no other Newcastle player has been able to produce.
Townsend’s ability to dribble in from the wing and provide a powerful shot, could be crucial if Newcastle make a last minute run at avoiding relegation.
Given the Magpies’ current lack of attacking options, it maybe would be wise for Benitez to place more emphasis on getting the ball to Townsend.
Players who carried Newcastle earlier in the season are currently severely out of form.
Wijnaldum hasn’t scored since January. Shelvey has failed to dictate games the way he did in his first few appearances in a Newcastle shirt. And while Mitrovic scored twice against Norwich, he needs quality service to really make an impact.
Maybe it’s Townsend’s turn to take up the cause and carry the attacking burden for Newcastle. A player who has a lot to prove, Andros Townsend has been playing hard and is one player who looks genuinely bothered by Newcastle’s current form.
His ability to strike from distance is a boon for the Magpies, and with his speed he could get in advantageous positions to supply crosses for Mitrovic.
To really be the player Newcastle needs, Townsend must perform on a more consistent basis. But with Newcastle so close to relegation, maybe making Townsend a more central part of the attacking plan would allow him to make more of a difference.
