Predicting the Newcastle team v Stoke City is a minefield, due partly to the workings of Steve McClaren’s mind but even more so – down to the information/misinformation on fitness or otherwise of certain players.
Those definitely missing would appear to be:
Chancel Mbemba, Kevin Mbabu, Gabriel Obertan and Massadio Haidara, Tim Krul, Sylvain Marveaux and Curtis Good, whilst Fabricio Coloccini is almost certainly out as well.
On the other hand; Jack Colback, Vurnon Anita, Paul Dummett, Siem de Jong and Aleksandar Mitrovic are all said to be back.
However, all the local press are reporting on Wednesday morning that Andros Townsend and Papiss Cisse are doubts and could have late fitness tests before the match.
Added to this, Cheick Tiote was reported to be training away from the main group in recent days so must also be a doubt.
Taking all of that into consideration, if fit, I think the Newcastle team v Stoke City could line up something like this:
The likes of Saivet and Doumbia have shown nothing to suggest why they should be included and so my guess is that McClaren will go for what he sees as ‘tried and tested’ (even though we never win away from home), with Colback (of Tiote isn’t fit enough) and Dummett back in.
Perez should be included if Townsend doesn’t make it, whilst Mitrovic will surely play if available.
The fact Wijnaldum never scores on his travels or features much at all in away games, is a conundrum to be solved at a later date…with no real alternative, who would you play ahead of him?
