Stoke 1 Newcastle 0 Wednesday 2 March 7.45pm
We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle, to talk about some aspect of the match:
“Lose on Saturday and that’s it, we surely can’t survive.
“Another away performance lacking any creativity going forward.
“Wijnaldum nowhere to be seen and Sissoko was his usual embarrassing self. And apparently they’re are two best players…
“It would have been moderately acceptable had we not conceded late on- a point would have got us out of the relegation zone and that’s all that matters right now.
“Why does McClaren only make changes once we fall behind? His reluctance to take the game to the opposition is baffling.
“Three changes needed on Saturday for me: Sissoko, Gouffran and Mitrovic out. Townsend, Perez and Doumbia in.”
“Based on tonight’s first look at McClaren’s 12 game survival plan I firmly believe he is taking us down.
“I can’t believe if given the choice, the players would want to play to such negative tactics, it has to be coming from him.
“Note to Manager – we need to score goals to stay up boss.”
“Strange team selection, perhaps focused on Saturday’s home fixture v Bournemouth, but far too negative in my opinion.
“We’ll need to pull a result like Swansea have tonight out of the bag if we’re gonna have any chance of staying up.
“Another depressing evening involving NUFC.”
“Just when you think you are about to get a dirty, scruffy, well-earned and desperately needed point from a dirty, scruffy team (well used to be) – we do exactly what we do best away from home – lose.
“Again no points from an away game, again no goals from an away game.
“Steve the man with the magical Hair horn Island says he is ‘frustrated’ at how inconsistent we are. Hmmm.
“We are actually consistent away from home, just the wrong type of consistency – more of the brown and sticky variety.
“Said for ages, it’s all down to the home games – can we win them? Wouldn’t bet with your money.
“Actually I would bet with your money and would probably lose it. Soz.”
