Newcastle will be the best squad ever to go down if they end up in the bottom three after the final day, according to Steve Claridge.
Working on Radio Five Live, Claridge says that people talk about the 2008/09 Newcastle team being the ‘best’ to go down but this year would see Steve McClaren manage an even greater feat.
Steve Claridge just can’t believe how McClaren has got United second bottom when you consider the players at his disposal.
Various pundits are now simply repeating what most fans have been saying for some time, as Steve Claridge would put it to McClaren – ‘what are you doing?’.
Are the players/team really as bad as they look?
Or is it a case of them being McClarened?
Steve Claridge speaking on Radio Five Live:
“How can Newcastle be in the bottom three?
“I can’t have that, with the players he (Steve McClaren) has got and the quality he has there…
“To be in the bottom three you have got to look at the manager and say ‘what are you doing?’ because he isn’t not getting it right.
“They said the last time (2008/09) they went down, that it was the best team to ever go down.
“This will certainly be the best squad (to end up in Championship), if they get relegated.”
