Shola Ameobi has helped trigger a remarkable turn in fortunes for Fleetwood Town.

After Bolton were forced to turn down his offer to play for nothing due to a transfer embargo, the former Newcastle striker rocked up to League One outfit Fleetwood, deep in relegation trouble.

His first start was a 0-0 draw at Port Vale and then this has been followed up by 3 wins out of 4 in only 10 days.

Four starts and a substitute appearance have led to 10 points from 15 and Fleetwood are now four points and four places above the relegation zone.

To put it into perspective, Fleetwood had won only once in 10 league games since 24 November before Shola Ameo0bi arrived.

What’s more, Saturday’s win was at Coventry who were then fifth, whilst Shola Ameobi scored the winner last night in the 2-1 win over Gillingham who were third before this defeat.

With a deal at Fleetwood until the end of the season, where will superhero Shola swoop next to inspire and save…

No wonder Fleetwood manager Steven Pressley was buzzing after Shola Ameobi’s winning goal:

“We got off to a wonderful start by scoring two goals in the opening ten minutes, but we had to dig deep at times as they gave us problems in the wide area.

“We changed the system slightly and I was really pleased with the way the players went about it. It was really tough tonight and the conditions were difficult.

“The most important thing was the three points and not the performance. There was a real determination about the group.

“One of the reasons I made the change tonight with Shola coming back in was because they were a team in general who gave up opportunities to cross against them.

“We managed to cross brilliantly for his goal, and in the early stages of the game he was a constant threat for us.”
