Paul Merson has given his verdict on Newcastle v Bournemouth.

The player turned pundit says that Saturday is Newcastle United’s Cup Final when they play Bournemouth and he believes because of that, Newcastle will win 2-1.

Obviously he hasn’t studied Newcastle’s record in cup finals too closely…

The alternative if Newcastle don’t win their cup final will be relegation according to Paul Merson, who says United ‘may as well pack it in’ if they can’t rouse themselves for this crucial match.

Merson points out that Swansea pulling six points clear has effectively meant it is now two of Newcastle, Norwich and Sunderland to go down with Villa.

The fact that Bournemouth have only lost one of their last eight Premier League matches and have played some outstanding high energy pressing football, means Newcastle will have to play very well to match and beat them.

Have the players got it in them?

Paul Merson talking to Sky Sports:

“This is Newcastle’s cup final.

“They have seen Swansea get an unbelievable result at the Emirates (beating Arsenal 2-1), which has reduced the relegation battle into a four-horse race.

“So if Newcastle lose this…

“But as it is their cup final, I am going to go for Newcastle to win 2-1 – they simply have to win this game.

“And if they lose it, I think they are relegated.

“If they cannot get themselves up for this game, they may as well pack it in.”
