Newcastle United lost a behind closed doors match to near neighbours Hartlepool United on Wednesday.

Hartlepool are currently 22nd in League Two and manager Craig Hignett was very happy with the performance of his team against Newcastle.

The match was described as a Hartlepool eleven against a Newcastle reserve team but no mention of who actually played for the Magpies.

Obviously nobody who travelled to Stoke would have been involved but it would be interesting to know if any of Newcastle’s players returning from injury got any game time, such as Siem de Jong, Papiss Cisse, Massadio Haidara, Vurnon, Kevin Mbabu, Chancel Mbemba and Fabricio Coloccini.

No word from the Newcastle end of things as yet about the match.

Craig Hignett revealed the behind closed doors friendly had taken place, when speaking ahead of Hartlepool’s trip to Barnet on Saturday:

“I want all the lads champing at the bit and to be fair they have.

“We had a reserve game against Newcastle and all the lads did really well, put in a really good performance and won the game.

“The players did a lot of good things I liked, so I have a good problem for the weekend.”
