Mark Lawrenson has checked out the Newcastle v Bournemouth clash on Saturday afternoon.

The BBC pundit really earning his money and showing that nothing gets past him, by declaring that this is a ‘massive game’ for Newcastle and that they ‘desperately need a win’.

When you are in 19th place of 20 with only 11 games remaining and a worse goal difference than all of your rivals (Villa already down so they don’t count…), it is not difficult to see that Newcastle might be in a little bit of bother…

Mark Lawrenson has predicted a 2-1 win for Newcastle, which would maybe be a lot more impressive than first appears, considering that Bournemouth have lost only one of their last 10 away matches (all competitions).

The biggest positive for Newcastle of course has been a little bit of backbone creeping into the home form (let’s not mention the away games…), United unbeaten since the turn of the year with two wins and a draw.

Mark Lawrenson talking to BBC Sport:

“This has turned into a massive game for Newcastle, who desperately need a win.

The Magpies are second bottom, eight points behind Bournemouth, and it is already looking like three of the current bottom four will be the teams going down.”

In the other weekend games, Mark Lawrenson has predicted wins for Sunderland to lose at Southampton, Norwich to lose at Swansea, plus Villa trounced at Manchester City, a set of results that would leave the Premier League looking like this:

33 Swansea

32 Bournemouth

27 Newcastle

24 Sunderland

24 Norwich

16 Aston Villa
