Newcastle United are once again well represented as England announced their latest squads.
Winger Alex Gilliead is called up for the England Under 20 squad. Currently on loan at Carlisle, Gilliead and his international team-mates play a friendly against Canada on Sunday 27 March at Doncaster’s Keepmoat Stadium.
Elsewhere, Adam Armstrong and Freddie Woodman have both been included in the England Under 19s squad for their European Championship qualifying campaign.
Armstrong met new Manager Rafa Benitez for talks on Sunday but it is expected he will remain at Coventry for the rest of the season to continue to progress his career.
Freddie Woodman has ended up in a bit of a no-man’s land when it comes to club football.
Recalled from a successful loan spell at Crawley due to an injury crisis at Newcastle, Woodman has ended up on the bench for United a few times – but the net result has been next to no regular football even at reserve team level. Next week sees the end of the emergency loan period where Woodman could go out to a lower league club, something which would appear to be a no-brainer for the young England keeper.
The finals of this year’s European Championships will be held in Germany in July but they need to qualify from their group matches in Spain later this month.
They have three games:
England v Georgia Thursday 24 March
England v Greece Saturday 26 March
England v Spain Tuesday 29 March
