Newcastle fans had a rare matchday to enjoy but what about West Brom fans?
United dominated Saturday’s match from start to finish but would the visitors agree..?
Were the Baggies rubbish, or were Newcastle excellent, or a bit of both?
Three points to Newcastle and now only five between the two clubs – can West Brom be dragged in and can Newcastle now remain in the ‘safe’ position of fourth from bottom?
We searched out the reaction of the West Brom fans via one of their top message boards WestBrom.com.
‘Newcastle decimated by injuries in defence and our starting 11 the most negative ever…’
‘I don’t mind unattractive football. But to have absolutely no intention of winning a game against a relegation threatened team is totally unacceptable.’
‘Let’s hear what the dinosaur (Pulis) has to say. I’ll put money on one of the below.
1: Injuries are costing us 2: Newcastle have spent a lot of money 3: Players are tired.’
‘We look like the worst team in the league nearly every week. Midfield doesn’t exist. we play 7 defenders instead. Today we should have lost by 5.’
‘Utter garbage. Never bashed Pulis but fast running out of patience with him. Feel so sorry for those who travelled up for that. Woeful selection, just wrong, wrong wrong.’
‘I was disappointed we weren’t in for Shelvey or Townsend, but that fact Newcastle (allegedly) made a £24m offer for Berahino shows the difference in what market we’re shopping in.’
‘Got what we deserved from being too negative at start, the only upside is we played better in the last 15mins and Newcastle defence rocky. Praise for Baggies fans who could be heard all through the game – top lads, have a good night out.’
‘Utter trash, not sure I can watch the next match. I can take losing but football is supposed to be about entertainment and what we’re serving up is some of the most negative football I’ve seen played by any side.’
‘I saw one scuffle and me mate saw the other one over McClean, fans should let them fight it out and move on, the young lad pinned up by his neck in the bogs, should have known better as the bloke was much bigger than him. My mate said the one over McClean there was quite a few involved and punches were exchanged.’
‘The only ‘attack’ Pulis has put in this club is that he’s given it a major ‘heart attack’. We’re a pale shadow of anything resembling a football team. I see no sign of his ‘rebuilding’ work, if anything we are being ‘demolished’. The guy is a cancer for this club and if he’s not removed soon then we are f***ed. The championship is looking like the west midlands league next season I’m afraid.’
‘I have a mate who is Newcastle fan, lives in the West Midlands, Season ticket holder and goes away too. Cracking bloke, always joking how bad Newcastle are and still thinks they will go down, here is what he texted me, word for word –
“I have to say mate, Make no bones, we are s**t and likely to go down, but you made us look good! Have to say in my time going over the last 18 years, I have seen some rubbish from us and some rubbish opposition but today West Brom were in the worst 5 performances I have ever seen from a team at St James (and that includes us).
Talking to a couple of your fans after, cracking blokes but they looked like they had the life sucked out of them and I got the impression today wasn’t a one off, one of only times I have ever felt sorry for an opposition fan today, but watching you lot was a new experience, it was painful”
‘The problem is Pulis teams are set up not to concede. When that happens, we haven’t got enough creativity in the team, or natural goalscorers to turn it around. Of the new Newcastle players, I would take any one of Shelvey, Townshend or Wijnaldum, but we find another holding player like Sandro.’
‘Pritchard would have been better suited from the start, allowing us to take the game to Newcastle. Instead he comes on at halftime with Newcastle looking more than confident due to our tactics in the first half. That said he still looked better than Gardner.’
‘How was Berahino able to play the second half if he was not fit enough to start. I would have started him and put Newcastle on the back foot. Pulis is way too negative.’
‘Heard the team news and any pre-match glimmer of ‘excitement’ was immediately drained from me as you knew we would start low energy and negatively which would give a poor Toon side and their restless crowd the initiative…….’
