Newcastle United were desperate at Goodison Park on Wednesday night, going down by three goals to an Everton side who also struck the woodwork three times and brought out a string of outstanding saves from Rob Elliot.
In the build up to Saturday afternoon’s vital game with West Brom, hopefully none of the first team took in the Newcastle United Under 18s match for inspiration earlier in the day…
Newcastle’s Academy team were hosting Everton less than 72 hours after that match at Goodison Park and within eight minutes the writing was on the wall.
Newcastle defender Owen Bailey was red carded for a foul just outside the box and the visitors scored from the resultant free-kick.
Some decent goalkeeping by Ben Smith and the Newcastle goal leading the charmed life, meant no further damage was done until seconds before half-time, Everton doubling up and nothing Smith could do on this occasion.
Once again 10 man Newcastle battled manfully after the break until the floodgates opened with just less than half an hour to go, the Toffees going 3-0 up.
From there on in it was desperate as there was a collapse similar to that seen by the first team at the Etihad earlier this season.
Everton ended up putting six away in those final thirty minutes without reply.
They say what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, so hopefully Newcastle’s young stars of the future aren’t too shellshocked when they next step out onto the pitch.
