Steve McClaren has once again given a less than convincing defence of both himself and his team.

On a day when Chelsea could and should have had double figures instead of ‘only’ five, we just get more talk of needing ‘hard work’ and getting players back to full fitness etc etc.

Nowhere does he mention the biggets weakness of all – his own team selection and the formation he sends the players out in.

Never mind what laughingly passes for tactics…

You can’t put all the blame on Steve McClaren as his players were unbelievably sloppy and made ridiculous errors as well, but after 26 games you have to really question the person in charge of putting that team out on the field.

Keeping a totally inexperienced winger at left-back when he had the likes of Colback and Lascelles available is just ridiculous – surely he could have foreseen what the likes of Willian might do to him?

Steve McClaren talking to the BBC:

“I think we caused our own problems by not being able to deal with the ball.

“We knew Chelsea would come out quick, they put an attacking team out.

“I said the first twenty minutes are vital, we get through them…we got through them and we three down.

“We just need to pick up some points away from home, we won’t do playing like this – giving away goals….we need to solve that.

“Twelve games to go, eighteen days to reflect, hard work.

“We need to get some fit and some fitter, twelve cup finals to come.”
