Steve McClaren has declared that it is now a 12 game season for Newcastle United.

The Head Coach looking at the last dozen matches and seeing six or seven teams due to fight it out for survival in these last three months.

Let’s hope Newcastle do better in this 12 match season, as opposed to the relegation form they have shown in the 26 game one that we have all just endured.

Steve McClaren was talking from La Manga and says that the five day trip is ‘intense’ but has the intention of sending the players back to Tyneside ‘refreshed, renewed and ready’ for the relegation battle.

Jonjo Shelvey was also interviewed earlier and whilst he thought La Manga was impressive, he did say that a combination of the wind and the open nature of the pitches, meant that the balls were flying everywhere and the players struggling to put two passes together.

Steve McClaren talking to the club’s official tv channel:

“It is important that players just get ready and play some minutes, we tried to get a game in England; we couldn’t manage that, so it is ideal coming out here.

“I am used to La Manga, I have been here plenty of times. It has good facilities.

“It was nice just to get the flight out of our legs and do a little bit of work and get ready for a couple of good days of work on Thursday and Friday.

“Breakfast together, lunch together, just being around the hotel together… it is difficult to create that kind of togetherness but it’s great because you’ve got four days together.

“It is intense and hopefully we’ll come back refreshed, renewed and ready for the challenge again.

“It’s good to get everybody together. It is a mixture between work, rest and recuperation, and setting some targets for the end of the season.

“It is a 12 game season now. There are six or seven teams (in relegation fight) and we have got to make sure we are one, two or three above that.”
