I don’t want to worry anybody who supports either of Newcastle and Sunderland but the odds are massively stacked against either of the two clubs surviving this season.

Going back through the last 19 years, the Chronicle report that of the 57 clubs who were in the relegation zone with 12 matches remaining, only 9 ended up surviving

With Newcastle and Sunderland occupying 18th and 19th going into this weekend’s matches, the writing is on the wall.

Recent seasons do offer some encouragement.

In 2013/14 Sunderland were third bottom but survived, with Newcastle’s usual donation of points making the difference.

Whilst last season, Leicester were rock bottom with 12 games to go and Villa were second bottom, yet both survived.

Obviously a bit of a different path for those two teams since then….
