Paul Merson thinks that Newcastle United’s attacking play last Saturday against West Brom deserved four or five goals BUT the fact they failed to take their chances is a worry to him.
As Merson points out, Newcastle’s away form is pretty dismal, have won two, drawn one and lost nine – with only six goals scored and 26 conceded.
The former Middlesbrough player says that he has to take into account just how poor Newcastle were at Everton only last midweek and so is backing the home side this weekend.
No close things for Paul Merson, as he is predicting a 3-0 win for Chelsea.
Whilst their form has picked up under Hiddink, Chelsea have still only won four of their 13 Premier League games at Stamford Bridge, which makes Paul Merson’s predicted 3-0 scoreline hopefully a little unlikely.
Whilst having only two clubs that have conceded more than Newcastle, it is obvious that maybe the even more severe problem has been the failure to take chances.
If Newcastle can pull that together and with the help of Townsend and Shelvey improve on six goals in 12 away games – surely United have a fighting chance…?
Paul Merson speaking to Sky Sports:
“Newcastle played really well last week against West Brom and could have won by four or five.
“But, in the end, it was only 1-0 and West Brom had a chance to equalise late on, so it’s worrying they didn’t put the game to bed.
“Chelsea are a different side now the players want to have a go, they have really picked up under Guus Hiddink.
“I’ve got to take Newcastle’s dismal showing at Everton last week into consideration though, so I’m backing Chelsea here.
“Newcastle’s away form has a greater influence than their impressive home performances.”
