Paul Merson has given us his prediction for the Newcastle v West Brom clash tomorrow.

The former Arsenal player thinks that Saturday’s encounter ‘has the makings of a good game’.

Any match featuring a Tony Pulis team rarely leads to a ‘good game’ but as Paul Merson also points out, this is a must-win game for Newcastle so surely at least Steve McClaren has no choice but to attack on this occasion.

The Newcastle Head Coach admitted after Wednesday’s defeat that his ‘game plan’ had been to let Everton have as much of the ball as they wanted, then hope they would lose possession and rush up the other end and score a breakaway goal.

No wonder so many Newcastle fans are wondering how long even Mike Ashley will give a Head Coach whose main/only attribute appears to be that he is willing to be the owner’s puppet, in the same manner as Alan Pardew before him.

With the £80m spent in the last seven months, surely Ashley must be hearing the warning bells when McClaren doesn’t believe he has players capable of going out and dictating a game.

Paul Merson mentions how rarely West Brom lose to struggling teams under Pulis but despite this tips Newcastle to win 2-1.

With away trips to Chelsea and Stoke next up, let’s hope he is on the money this time.

Paul Merson talking to Sky Sports:

“This has the makings of a good game.

“West Brom under Tony Pulis rarely lose to sides at the bottom and they play well away from home.

“Saying that, I have got to go for Newcastle to get the win.

“They’re at home, they’ve got all their new signings and they need to bounce back from their defeat at Everton.

“It’s a must-win game for Newcastle, they’ll be thinking they haven’t got too many of these sort of games remaining.”
