Newcastle United have confirmed that Fabricio Coloccini suffered a slight calf strain during the recent training camp in La Manga.
Reports at the time stated that the United Captain picked up the injury in a ‘warm down’ after the Lillestrom friendly on Saturday.
Coloccini was an unused substitute in that 2-1 win for Newcastle.
Tuesday’s official club update says that the central defender has undergone a scan and the results suggest that the injury is not as bad as had been first thought.
Newcastle United claim that their medical staff are working hard to try and get Coloccini available for Stoke in eight days time, though surely if it was painful enough to warrant a scan then hard to imagine him making that game.
Many Newcastle supporters are no doubt stuck in a quandary of worrying about Coloccini returning to partner Steven Taylor, or going into the unknown of a Taylor and Lascelles partnership, with neither of those players having shown this season that they are likely to be the answer to United’s abysmal defensive record either.
