Newcastle United have failed in a deadline day bid for Michy Batshuayi according to reports this morning.
L’Equipe say that Newcastle contacted Marseille this morning but were instantly rebuffed by the French club.
With 15 goals in 29 matches (all competitions) this season, the Ligue 1 club are determined not to lose their biggest asset, at least not yet.
L’Equipe report that Tottenham (also long time admirers) have also asked about Batshuayi, whilst Stoke (also claimed to be after Berahino) have supposedly had a bid rejected.
The 22 year old looks certain to move on in the summer unless Marseille manage to get Champions League football and the French club are confident they will get a far bigger fee if they wait until then.
Newcastle have been linked with Batshuayi for some time and reports earlier this season said that Newcastle scouts were regularly watching the striker, though having said that, Graham Carr appears to have a season ticket at Marseille…
Marseille signed him in summer 2014 for around £4.5m after he scored for fun in Belgium (Standard Liege), starting 73 league matches and scoring 39 goals.
Last season Michy Batshuayi was used almost exclusively as a substitute but still scored nine Ligue 1 goals despite starting only six league games.
In March last year he received his first call-up for the senior Belgium side and made a dramatic debut.
After only three minutes of football for his country, Batshuayi scored against Cyprus, making it a 5-0 win in the European Championships qualifier. Then in his only other appearance for Belgium, Batshuayi scored in a 3-1 win over Italy, once again coming off the bench.
With Newcastle clearly looking closely at the leagues in Belgium and Holland in recent times, it would appear likely that he will have been watched by Newcastle even prior to his move to Marseille last summer.
The right footed striker is under six foot tall so if there is substance to the story, he would feasibly be a striker to play with Mitrovic, rather than as an alternative. A bit like Berahino...
There is naturally an awful lot of smoke and mirrors to contend with, especially on this worst of all – deadline day.
However, it does look as though Newcastle are actively looking to bring a striker in and the smart money would appear to be on Seydou Doumbia. With claims yesterday that he had gone through a medical on Tyneside and the announcement of his loan deal, with buying clause, is simply being delayed until today.
