The relegation fight is hotting up but it could have been so much worse for Newcastle United.

With 16 minutes to go Norwich were beating West Ham 2-0 and Newcastle were heading for the bottom three.

After Sunderland’s earlier win over Manchester United that put them only one point behind Newcastle, it was the worst of all combination of results at the very bottom ahead of the match at Stamford Bridge.

However, two late goals from Payet and Noble reduced Norwich to only a point.

These are the complete results so far on Saturday:

Sunderland 2 Man Utd 1

Bournemouth 1 Stoke 3

Crystal Palace 1 Watford 2

Everton 0 West Brom 1

Norwich 2 West Ham 2

Swansea 0 Southampton 1

Better news above Newcastle as Bournemouth and Swansea both lost, whilst Alan Pardew and Crystal Palace are doing their best to join the relegation fight with yet another defeat.

Newcastle will remain outside the bottom three unless they lose by two or more goals – hopefully though our ambitions, or at least hopes, are higher than that today.

This is how the Premier League looks ahead of Chelsea v Newcastle:

32 West Brom

30 Chelsea

28 Bournemouth

27 Swansea

24 Newcastle

24 Norwich

23 Sunderland

16 Aston Villa
