Jamaal Lascelles was ‘buzzing’ after Newcastle won on Saturday.

Lillestrom were the better team in the first half but Newcastle eventually got on top in the second, no doubt helped by the opposition tiring as they are currently in pre-season and don’t kick-off competitively until next month.

Despite the narrow 2-1 scoreline thanks to goals from Wijnaldum and Aarons, Jamaal Lascelles couldn’t contain his excitement, declaring that ‘the boys are over the moon with the result’.

Reminiscent of a puppy who gets very excited about everything, Jamaal Lascelles was in buoyant mood and despite Newcastle staring possible relegation in the face, the defender declared, ‘I’m not worried about anything, today shows just how well we can play.’

Lascelles says that the ‘frustrating thing about it, we’ve got so much talent and shouldn’t be in the position that we are in’…but with only 12 games to go and 26 gone, it is impossible for any team to argue that their position in the league table isn’t deserved.

Jamaal Lascelles partnered Steven Taylor against Lillestrom and now they look set to continue against Stoke, with both Mbemba and Coloccini set to be missing.

I just hope that Lascelles impersonation of an irrepressible puppy still remains after the trip to Stoke – until the players show that their talent is worth more than 18th place in table then no rational person will believe that there is nothing to worry about.

Jamaal Lascelles talking to NUFC TV:

“I think that (Lillestrom win) is a great game for us and as much as anything it is a massive confidence boost, this win.

“At the minute you know, the boys are excellent, a few new players played 90 minutes and I think it is just what we needed.

“More importantly, the way the gaffer told us to play, we did it, and as a result of that we won the game. He told us to get tighter up at the back, press more, and I thought the boys up front and the wingers did excellent today. They had a free role up front and could do what they want.

“At the back it was pretty solid and they didn’t really hurt us at all. A sloppy goal to give away but we bounced back well from it and overall we were mikes the better team.

“Gini took his goal well, he has got loads of talent and you know this game…hopefully will bring us a lot of confidence and I think that is what we need to take us into Premiership games. Any goal to concede is not great for a defender but that one in particular was really sloppy.

“They didn’t trouble us at all and they got one from an individual error and it cost us, but like I said, we bounced back well from it and the boys are over the moon with the result.”

‘Rolando as well, he’ll be delighted to score a header?’

“Oh yeah, definitely. You know, that boy has got loads of talent and obviously the gaffer stuck him on and played him on the wing. As soon as he is on the wing he has done great. I’m really pleased for him, he has come on and won us the game.

“It just shows how the players can change – you know, hopefully now everybody is really high, we’re buzzing from it. Like I said, that is just what we need for the Stoke game.”

‘What have you made of the training camp altogether?’

“Brilliant. It has been a great little trip. Training has been really intense, a few double sessions which were good, hopefully come back fitter from it, sharper from it.

“We have had a few meetings, player meetings, which I think will be very beneficial. We need to start winning more games, so overall, excellent trip.

“Boys get on really well, staff are excellent, so yes over the moon. We have sat down and had a lot of meetings and we have got loads of talent, that’s the frustrating thing about it, we’ve got so much talent and shouldn’t be in the position that we are in.

“That is just football for you. I’m not worried about anything, today shows just how well we can play. We just need to take that confidence, because I think that is what it is, to do the job at home and away games.”
