Discussion about who should be the Newcastle Captain intensified over the weekend.

Rumours had circulated that Fabricio Coloccini had not just lost the job for the Lillestrom match which he had sat out.

The need for a new Newcastle Captain, at least for the short-term, became reality with news on Sunday evening that Coloccini had picked up a calf injury and is expected to be out for around a month.

Whilst the club haven’t gone public with any update on the Argentine defender’s condition, it looks at the very least that a replacement Newcastle Captain will be need for Stoke in eight days time.

So the question was, who should be Newcastle Captain v Stoke?

We came up with eight possibilities, all players who look set to start against Stoke City, injuries permitting…

We asked for your vote on which would make the best Newcastle Captain and there was one who was way out in front.

Share of votes cast:

44% Jonjo Shelvey

17% Gini Wijnaldum

13% Daryl Janmaat

8% Rob Elliot

7% Steven Taylor

7% Jack Colback

2% Cheick Tiote

2% Moussa Sissoko

Jonjo Shelvey clearly the first choice with the Dutch pair of Janmaat and Wijnadlum the only other two credible contenders in the fans’ eyes.

Interesting to see whether Steve McClaren agrees…
