At the end of December Ayoze Perez said he was ‘preparing a surprise’ and ‘in the next few days you will know it’.

On the 2 January Newcastle surprised us by looking the better team at Arsenal, despite the eventual 1-0 defeat, but that wasn’t the Spanish striker’s secret.

Newcastle fans at the time assumed a new contract was in the offing but nothing was heard from player or club.

Monday afternoon though has seen final confirmation, only minutes after Seydou Doumbia was unveiled as Newcastle’s latest (loan) signing, it has been confirmed that Ayoze Perez has indeed signed a new contract.

The striker now contracted to the club until summer 2021 and presumably on much improved terms after his success so far at St James Park

Ayoze Perez 30 December 2015:

‘The year is almost finished and is time to think about what we have done during this 12 months.

I know that this year have not been the best for the team but despite the bad results, we have learnt good things and we have to use it in the next year to live up to the support that you, our fans, give us every day.

Even when the things were not good for us your support was amazing.

Thanks for your support because I feel like home even I’m miles and miles away from my family and my island.

Here’s to a successful year for the Geordie family!

PS: I’m preparing a surprise, in the next few days you will know it!

Howay the lads!

Newcastle United Official Statement 1 February 2016

Newcastle United forward Ayoze Perez has signed a new long-term contract at the Club.

The 22-year-old has put pen-to-paper on a new five-and-a-half-year deal which will keep him at St. James’ Park until the summer of 2021.

Perez arrived on Tyneside in June 2014 from his hometown team Tenerife, where he had risen through the ranks.

He quickly became an important part of the Magpies’ first-team squad and to date has scored 12 goals in 63 appearances in all competitions – five of which have come this season.

“It’s a special day for me, a big day for me,” said the Spanish under-21 international.

“The truth is I’m really happy here, so it’s a good thing for me – and I hope it’s the same for the Geordie family.

“Newcastle gave me everything and I’m really pleased to sign this new contract.”

Newcastle United head coach Steve McClaren added: “I am delighted that Ayoze has signed a new deal.

“He is a very good player with huge potential and someone we believe has a very big future at Newcastle United.

“We are building this Club for the long-term and Ayoze is a very important part of that.”
