Alan Shearer on new signing ‘He will be a real fans favourite, they will love him there’

Alan Shearer declared that it was a massive three points as Newcastle beat West Brom 1-0 and climbed out of the bottom three, thanks in large part to Norwich losing 2-0 at Aston Villa.

At St James Park though, Alan Shearer says he is still surprised that despite struggling to score goals and continuing to leak them at the other end, Newcastle bought three players in January who are all midfielders.

Despite that, one of them was Shearer’s man of the match and a player who the Newcastle legend believes could become a fans favourite.

Step forward Jonjo Shelvey.

The former United number nine says that he was amazed that West Brom stood off Shelvey and that by doing so, they allowed him to control the midfield and the match.

Shearer was full of praise for Shelvey’s range of passing and thinks that of he keeps playing like he did on Saturday, the Newcastle fans will ‘love him’.

A bit like the team overall, Jonjo Shelvey has played very well to help beat both West Ham and West Brom at home, but with his team-mates has put together two poor displays in the losses at Watford and Everton.

A big challenge for Jonjo Shelvey and the other players, as with Chelsea and Stoke away in the next two matches they have to find the solution to the away day woes, or else they will almost certainly find themselves back in the bottom three.

Talking on Match of The Day – Gary Lineker:

“Newcastle spent £28.5m in the window, four different players, seem to have taken an instant effect?”

Alan Shearer:

“Well, slightly surprising, because they have not been able to score goals and they haven’t been able to keep them out…so they signed three midfielders!

“Having said that, one of them was absolutely outstanding today, Jonjo Shelvey. If you are going to give this guy time on the ball then he is more than capable of knocking passes.

“He often picked the ball up off the back four and sprayed it around, he kept the ball moving and moving it at pace. I was really surprised that West Brom stood off him and let him make passes like he did all afternoon.

“He controlled the midfield, his weighted ball into Mitrovic for the goal is brilliant…and that is a brilliant finish from Mitrovic, he has missed a lot of chances of late so that will do him the world of good – a very good finish.

“If Jonjo Shelvey keeps on performing like that, then he will be a real fans favourite, they will love him there.

“But a massive three points for Newcastle.”
