After watching Newcastle beat Lillestrom 2-1 on Saturday afternoon, Steve McClaren says the players have been told not to get too carried away with either victories or defeats.
The United boss thinks that is for others to do and has warned the team not to get too high with wins or too low with a defeat.
McClaren thought Emmanuel Riviere (came on for last 24 minutes) was ‘terrific’ in today’s friendly and that the likes of Doumbia, Saivet, Taylor and Lascelles got time out on the pitch.
For those looking for pointers with Stoke in mind…Taylor and Lascelles played together for the whole match, whilst Perez and Doumbia did the same at the other end of the pitch.
Though how much you could/should read into that is doubtful in the extreme…
Having said that, Newcastle’s away form is so abysmal (11 defeats in 14 away games under McClaren – 17 defeats in last 20 matches going further back), you would hope that the Head Coach is considering something more radical than the usual formation and tactics.
“It has been very worthwhile and very important to come away – we got away and into a different environment.
“We get the lads together and you are living with each other 24/7, there’s been a lot of talking and a lot of work – it has been enjoyable too. Their attitudes have always been very, very good.
“We have just talked about not getting too high when we win and when we lose a game, let’s not get too low.
“Other people can but we can’t – we try to level things out and train hard.
“This (Lillestrom game) was a decent work out in difficult conditions but good to see the likes of Jamie Sterry and Liam Gibson doing well.
“It was good to get minutes for Jamaal (Lascelles) and Steven Taylor along with Seydou (Doumbia) and Henri (Saivet). Plus Manu Riviere came back from injury and was terrific. Rolando (Aarons – watch his goal HERE) also benefited.
“Worthwhile and a good work out.”
