What did the Watford fans make of the Newcastle team…and indeed the travelling supporters?

Some interesting views expressed below, some on the mark but others believing a little too much of what they are fed from the media.

Watford rested four players including their top midfielder Capoue and the excellent main goalscorer Odion Ighalo, Newcastle on the other hand played a full strength team.

Newcastle just unlucky or failed to impress the Watford fans/neutrals?

As for the Newcastle supporters, are we as highly thought of as our team…?

Read on for an interesting outside persepective.

We searched out the reaction of the Watford fans via one of their top message boards WFCforums:

‘No way are they (Newcastle) going to want the distraction of the cup in their position. This is like taking a lame dog to be put down.’

‘I’ve almost felt sorry for the toon since Keegan’s rant as I wanted them to beat Manure to the title _ and give something for their 50000 long suffering fans to smile about in the last 50 years.

Oh well, success for them this year will be staying in the PL.

I can’t see Newcastle putting out a strong side with their precarious position, so it’ll be good to put them out of their misery in the cup and let them concentrate on the league.’

‘Magpies were saying pre season that they would being taking the Cups seriously, looking to win one. I can’t see them in the Capital Cup semi final line up and have to look a loooong way down the table to find them , keep up the good work McClaren and bring your brolly.’

‘Geordie fans turning on their players and singing, they deserve to go down for that reason alone.

A spell in the lower leagues will hopefully teach them they are not a big club. Never have been.’

‘Hasn’t yet had the desired effect on Leeds fans! Let’s give them another 10 seasons, eh?’

‘Great cheeky finish from Troy. Poor pitch prevented either team from playing well but Newcastle are spectacularly S***.’

‘Scrappy performance but we got the job done with Deeney getting a tidy goal. Newcastle looked bereft of confidence tbh.’

‘Pretty rubbish game, which Newcastle should have won. Good win though, and good to rest Capoue and Iggy.’

‘I was sat right behind the goal in the Rookery today, and Elliot’s save from Cathcart was brilliant. Worth pointing out as it doesn’t look like he touched it in the replays.’

‘All I could hear were the Geordies and they seemed in good spirits and optimistic. From where I was sitting there was a general feeling from the Watford fans that this was a ‘free hit’, if we win great, not too fussed if we lose.

Just a word on the Geordie fans. Boisterous and singing to begin with but never heard a peep out of them after we scored except for “We want our money back”, “you don’t know what you’re doing ” to McLaren and the unpleasant “You’re not fit to wear the shirt” when Thauvin went down injured.

People can say they are passionate, but I think they are despicable.’

‘Poor game in general. Newcastle were absolute toilet and their fans knew it. The fact that the bestest fans in the world eva didn’t get close to selling their allocation (see this article) shows the direction that club is headed.’

‘Great save from Elliot. Good game to win, especially as we tried a few players. I can’t believe they were booing their own team, I know they missed 3 or 4 good chances but they were clearly trying.’

‘We were a bit lucky and I feel a tiny bit sorry for the Newcastle fans – although not for their owner or manager.’

‘A straight forward win against a pretty bland side, full of inept defenders and useless strikers.

We never got out of third gear and it was still enough to knock them out. They gifted Deeney his goal, then had a mini competition as to who could miss the most open goals. It was comical at times.

McClaren is under pressure now though but I hope they keep him in charge for at least another couple of weeks.

EDIT:- I didn’t realise, but that was Newcastle’s strongest side possible……blimey!!’

‘Funny bit today was McClaren, constantly shouting to play it forward and shoot. At one point he turned and shouted ‘Why won’t he f***ing hit it.

Sad bit, Newcastle bought on a sub, second play he got injured and was taken off and the fans started chanting ‘you’re not fit to wear the shirt’… Bad really.

Scouting mission, altho never been a fan Sissoko was actually quite effective but even tho we have decent wing backs… That Janmaat would be a shoe in –  maybe the only bit of class they had.’

‘I thought NUFC weren’t all that bad at St James’ Park and were a good side with the more fluid set of individuals today. Thats the issue though, they are a set of talented individuals, not a team. I don’t believe they’ll go down, neither do they deserve to. And I thought their fans were characteristically amusing and right in what they singing.’
