What Swansea fans have been saying about Jonjo Shelvey going to Newcastle…

What do Swansea fans think of Jonjo Shelvey’s move to Tyneside?

Fair to say that relations between the midfielder and some of the supporters at the Liberty Stadium had become a little strained but how do they feel now the dust has settled.

Are they pleased to have got rid of trouble, or gutted to have lost a quality player, or a bit of both…?

Jonjo Shelvey of course helped Newcastle to a 2-1 win over West Ham, dumping Swansea into the relegation zone.

Only for the Swans’ victory against Watford on Monday night to reverse positions.

It is likely the two clubs could well be running hand in hand right up to the end of the season but only just over a week after he moved, what do Swansea fans have to say about Jonjo Shelvey’s move to Newcastle United?

We visited the top Swansea fans forum Planet Swans to get this cross-section of views:

‘Lets be honest, did anyone not see Shelvey going there and doing well for them? He’s a petulant brat, and an absolute liability at times, but when he wants to be, he’s excellent. He’s got a point to prove now, and I’d be surprised if he doesn’t play an integral part of them staying up.

Also, anyone else noticed that Newcastle are on an upward curve? In December, they beat Liverpool & Spurs, collecting 7 points for the month. Good win again today against West Ham. These are teams that I don’t see us beating.

I know he was useless for us and completely uninterested, but I think strengthening our relegation rivals was insane.’

‘Ask yourself this. In our position, with our team and our players, if we had £12m to spend in this window, would you spend it on Shelvey? If the answer is no, and there is any other player available to us that would be a better use of the money, then we were right to get rid.’

‘I think we have strengthened them because, when he wants to be, he can be a real asset worth about 6/7 goals.

I don’t think we’ll spend the money and if we do, it’ll be on rubbish signings like Sinclair.

At the moment, I don’t think we’re better than Newcastle, Bournemouth or Norwich. That worries me.’

‘I think players will go anywhere that pays them what they want, I really do. And he went to Newcastle who were in a worse position than we are now when he signed for them. I know they’re a ‘big club’ but never seems to stop people like Norwich, or West Brom, or Sunderland signing players.’

‘The main crux of the situation to me is that we are stronger and £12m richer without Shelvey, and he will screw up, let’s not make any bones about that. Newcastle? With Mr Shelvey’s history, he really couldn’t have gone anywhere worse in the long run.’

‘So what would you have honestly done with him, we couldn’t have put up with any more performances like Palace and Oxford.’

‘Come on let’s get real. It looks like Newcastle were the only team to make a true offer not just talk.’

‘He may be the missing link in the Newcastle midfield or the weakest link but he sure as hell didn’t want to play for us.’

‘Just a thought… If we hadn’t sold Shelvey to Newcastle… They would have bought another player anyway. It might have been someone even more reliable.’

‘Did you see his passes?’
