Watford 2 Newcastle 1  Saturday 23 January 3pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle, to talk about some aspect of the match:

Ben Cooper:

“Disappointing result and performance in both boxes.

“If we had scored the first goal we would have won but once they had scored they pushed us around at the back and the second goal was a killer.

“On a day when Charlie Austin scored for Southampton and we missed so many chances, I am back to wondering if we have enough to get out of this.

“I am also at a loss to explain our formation and substitutions.

“Steve McClaren must know by now that that the reason we turn so may corners is because he doesn’t know the way.

“Now is not the not the time to try to be clever, it is the time to win matches by doing what you do best.”

George Stainsby:

“I like to think of myself as an optimist…

“…but we don’t have a ‘run’ of winnable games to get any momentum.

“So it will be two steps forward, one step back, until the end of the season.

“Paula Abdul might have a better long term plan.”

Nat Seaton:

“We need to score goals to survive.

“Mitro is definitely not the answer at present but there are no alternatives, be it a different centre forward or someone to help with some of the pressure on such young shoulders.

“Away at Everton next up, let’s hope by then we have some striking additions…”

Paul Lyon:

“Didn’t see all of the game but what I did didn’t exactly inspire me.

“We need to start taking our chances because we’re being punished every time we don’t.

“Results elsewhere are becoming increasingly more important each week.

Notts Toon:

“Reality bites!”

Jamie Swan:

“Sorry, got carried away…

“Enough chances to get a result but not really putting it in until 2-0 down.

“These are the type of results that could relegate us.

“Watford are not a great team – on the back of a terrible run but have beaten us 3 times!

“Good night Vienna.”
