Steve McClaren explains main role Jonjo Shelvey will play in Newcastle team v West Ham

Steve McClaren has selected Jonjo Shelvey to make his debut against West Ham, the former Swansea player going straight into the starting line-up.

In advance of the match the Newcastle Head Coach has explained what he sees as the main change Jonjo Shelvey will bring to his team against West Ham and the other 16 Premier League games this season.

McClaren says that Shelvey is a winner and a ‘damned good played’ who can score goals.

However, the United boss says that the main thing that the 23 year can bring, is the ability to get the team playing and to connect to play up, improving the team overall and bringing other players into the game.

Since Yohan Cabaye left, Newcastle have not had a playmaker, having to choose from the likes of Colback, Tiote, Anita and even Gouffran – none of them capable of dictating play.

A tough ask for Jonjo Shelvey to hit the ground running but that is what is undoubtedly needed.

Steve McClaren:

“I think Jonjo Shelvey is a winner, he is a damn good player and can play football.

“He can score goals but I think his main thing is to make us play, to assist and improve our team.”
