Rob Elliot thinks that Newcastle United’s front six is as good as any other team around.
With the team at last finding the killer instinct in the last week, five goals have helped secure four vital points against teams in the top six.
When Newcastle play at their best, Rob Elliot thinks there is nobody who can live with the United team.
The Newcastle keeper says that he knows Jonjo Shelvey well from their days at Charlton and had no doubts about him being able to do it for Newcastle, with Elliot saying that Shelvey is the closest thing he has seen to Steven Gerrard amongst the players he has played with.
Despite having played for the likes of Liverpool and England, Rob Elliot believes that Jonjo Shelvey was in awe of the atmosphere at St James Park on Saturday against West Ham.
Whilst he also thought that Shelvey was responsible for ‘warming the crowd up’ when he started ‘spraying’ the ball about.
As for Watford away on Saturday, Rob Elliot thinks that if Newcastle put the hard work in then the quality will show through.
Let’s hope he is right.
Rob Elliot talking to NUFC TV:
“We have dominated teams and just not had that killer instinct. I think we have that now, boys have got the confidence, great signing in Jonjo (Shelvey) and Henri (Saivet) has come in and made a good addition to the squad. I think it has given everybody a lift.
“I think it is all about our performances and our results. If we play how we know we can, then I don’t think the table is going to be an issue, as we know we will pick up the points.
“We know we have the quality, our front six with Darryl going down the right, it is as good as anyone I believe. If we get the balance right we can get things gelling together. I think it is only going to be positive things to come.”
‘We wouldn’t have got the points on Saturday without those saves?’
“It is nice to make saves but it is your job to a certain degree. That is why you are there as a keeper, if you don’t make saves then you wouldn’t be a goalkeeper.
“Jonjo Shelvey is quality – I’m lucky enough to know Jonjo well, I know his quality and I knew he would be fine. His mentality is fantastic and once he started spraying the ball around, the crowd really warmed up.
“He opened the game up and he is a brilliant addition to our squad. The biggest thing is the players really care and are a good group who are going to give it everything.
“Jonjo Shelvey is the only person I have seen and that I’ve played with, that could come close to Steven Gerrard. It is in Jonjo’s hands, if he wants to go and play fifty, a hundred times, for England, then he can.
“He has played for some big clubs and played for England, but the atmosphere on Saturday I think he was a bit in awe of that.”
‘Watford on Saturday?’
“We have got to go in and put in a proper away performance. Make sure we do all the horrible things; the tackles, the running back, the shape – then I think if we can do that then our quality will come through.
“The quality we have in the front six is enough to beat any team, on our day I don’t think there is anybody who can live with us.”
