Newcastle United have confirmed that winger Alex Gilliead has signed a new contract.

Turning 20 in two weeks time, the England Under 20s player said he ‘jumped at it’ when offered the new deal.

Gilliead believes that the success of his loan spell at Carlisle has helped him mature and win the new contract.

Newcastle United have also revealed that there is the option to also extend the contract by another year.

Yes to make his Newcastle debut, Alex Gilliead has scored three goals and also chalked up a number of assists, making 20 appearances for his loan club.

This Sunday sees a potentially massive occasion for both Alex Gilliead and fellow Newcastle loan player Macauley Gillesphey.

The pair helped Carlisle almost knock Liverpool out of the League Cup, the tie going to extra time and the Cumbrians only losing out on penalties.

Now they have a chance to have a go at Everton, with a sell-out Brunton Park crowd in front of the BT Sport cameras for the FA Cup fourth round match, a 1.30pm kick-off.

‘Newcastle United teenage forward Alex Gilliead has signed a new two-and-a-half-year contract.

The 19-year-old, who is currently on loan at League Two side Carlisle United until the end of the season, has put pen to paper on a deal which will keep him at St. James’ Park until 30th June 2018, with the option of a further year.

Gilliead is yet to make his first team debut for Newcastle but was an unused substitute at Leicester City in the FA Cup in January 2015 and is a current England Under-20 international.

“I’m over the moon, Newcastle is my boyhood club – I’ve always wanted to play for them and always will want to play for them, so as soon as I knew they wanted to offer me a new contract, I jumped at it.

“I’ve grown up a lot over the last few months at Carlisle and I think the loan has really helped me to get into this position.”
