Starting the season as third choice, Rob Elliot is now rated as one of the top 10 Premier League goalkeepers, judging by percentage of shots saved.
The United keeper is rated 10th, though only 2% covers number six to ten.
Top rated is Jack Butland who has saved 79% of the shots that have come his way.
The Stoke goalkeeper is arguably the most impressive Newcastle fans have seen this season, with his solo show the only thing that stood between United and victory in that goalless draw at St James Park.
Next on the list is Petr Cech, who has kept two clean sheets against Newcastle this season, though he had a fair bit more to do at the Emirates last weekend than at St James Park.
Rob Elliot has certainly exceeded expectations and with his 70% of shots saved, has certainly helped Newcastle bank points – such as the wins at Bournemouth and Tottenham.
The stats were put together by Sky Sports with percentage of saves alongside the Premier League goalkeepers – they had to have played a minimum of 10 PL games, so Tim Krul wasn’t included (his percentage unknown) but Rob Elliot’s 11 games qualified him:
79% Jack Butland (Stoke)
78% Petr Cech (Arsenal)
77% Hugo Lloris (Spurs)
75% Adrian (West Ham)
74% David de Gea (Man Utd)
72% Wayne Hennessy (Palace)
72% Heurelho Gomes (Watford)
72% Joe Hart (Man City)
71% Boaz Myhill (West Brom)
70% Rob Elliot (Newcastle)
