Thursday night saw Newcastle United make it three Cup knockouts in eight days, despite goals from Emmanuel Riviere and Sylvain Marveaux.
Newcastle had a strong side out as they faced Everton’s reserves in the Under 21 Premier League Cup, with Rolando Aarons also playing the full 90 minutes alongside the two goalscorers named above.
Riviere put United up within seconds of the kick-off, only for Everton to equalise some 10 minutes later.
Rolando Aarons and Sylvain Marveaux then combined to put Newcastle back in front, Aarons winning a penalty that the Frenchman duly dispatched after 25 minutes were on the clock.
The scousers were back level only a few minutes into the second period and then went in front for the first time with a quarter of an hour left.
Young winger Callum Roberts looked to have sent the game into extra time when he scored in the last minute, only for the home side to instantly go back up the other end and score the winner.
The final 4-3 scoreline sends the Toffees into the last 16 of the Under 21 Premier League Cup and completes an unwanted trio of results.
Last Wednesday the Under 18s were outplayed and beaten at home by League Two AFC Wimbledon in the FA Youth Cup, then of course on Saturday the senior team made their usual rapid exit from the FA Cup at the first attempt. So last night made it three Cup defeats in only eight days, pretty good going even by Newcastle United standards.
Obviously there is a major allergy problem to silver throughout the whole staff at St James Park…
