Tuesday night was lively at St James Park and that continued afterwards when Louis van Gaal gave his post-match press conference.

Not shy of being seen as confrontational and lacking a bit of class, Louis van Gaal was obviously feeling the stress levels rising even further as he concluded his question and answer session with the assembled media.

Fielding a question about his captain Wayne Rooney, the Manchester United manager’s response was to throw it back at the press pack, Louis van Gaal stating:

“You have criticised him, I don’t.”

The Man Utd boss then stood up and walked (stalked?) off, only to then turn at the last second and point across the room at one particular journalist and called out:

“You too fat man. There.”

The journo in question was Newcastle fan Neil Custis, who as well as being cursed like the rest of us, also covers Manchester United and Manchester City for The Sun (his brother Sean is also a Newcastle fan and football journalist).

Now Neil Custis has given his own caustic reply in response to Louis van Gaal’s ‘fat’ jibe, writing for The Sun he said:

“You are right Louis, I am fat. I had a knee operation four months ago that stopped me running and going to the gym.

“That has resulted in me putting on nearly two stone. But I am trying to get it all off by having a dry January and calm February and a personal trainer.

“At least I can hold my hand up to my own failings. Shame others can’t.”

Maybe Newcastle won Tuesday night’s encounter with Man Utd in added time….
