Newcastle 2 West Ham 1  Saturday 16 January 3pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle, to talk about some aspect of the match:

Ben Cooper:

“Great first half, should have scored four, gave away a stupid goal at the start of the second and hung on.

“Vital win and while I could bang on about missed chances, Sissoko being hopeless and defensive blunders.

“For now though I’m quite happy that in the a game we had to win, we won and playyed some football too.”

Jamie Smith:

“Good performance in spite of the gift of a goal to the opposition.

“Shelvey played a huge part as we seem to have that missing link, someone who can play that killer ball from midfield.

“Wijnaldum star man for me though.

“Another enjoyable game but again need to capitalise on it next week.”

James Rutherford:

“Great debut from Shelvey, finally we have a forward thinking centre midfielder. Two glorious passes to set up our goals.

“Another man of the match performance from Gini, and credit to Mitrovic whose performance was probably forgotten after his shortcomings in front of goal.

“Game management needs to be worked on, at 2-1 we didn’t look as if we knew how to see the game out. Fans lauding Shelvey to shoot every chance he got probably didn’t help, but I’m just being picky.

“Great win. The revival (hopefully) continues!”

Nat Seaton:

“Get In!!!

“A proper game of footie for a change.

“First half intensity and some decent play got us the 3 points.

“Im smiling for once!

“Onwards and upwards…”

Paul Lyon:

“Typical Newcastle to put us through the wringer…

“If the first half performance was black, the second was white.

“At half time there were discussions of how many we could’ve/should’ve scored. Full time was sheer relief we hadn’t thrown it away.

“An important 3 points considering results elsewhere.

“Great debut from Shelvey! “

Leazes Park Ender:

“Everyone’s saying it, so I’ll say it too. Simply a massive three points. Huge.

“That was an impressive first half showing, with Shelvey delivering a range of passing.

“It wouldn’t be Newcastle without going through the wringer but we got there, even if that ref found seven minutes of added time.

“The league table still looks perilous but some progress made today.

“Might be a good idea to buy a striker. Agree Mitrovic’s hold up play is very good but we need a more goals.

“PS Now I’m off to get my free Puffa jacket. “

Notts Toon:

“We might be in the process of turning a corner…maybe.”

George Stainsby:

“Let’s take the momentum forward. No more false dawns.”

Jamie Swan:

“Been ill with flu and what a tonic!

“Thank God for Gini and a great start for Jonjo.

“Wouldn’t be us without conceding early in the 2nd and making me sweat even more than my virus ravaged carcass already was!

“Best team won against a very good team in WHUFC.

“Delighted isn’t the word. Hot Toddy pints being stacked now – upwards and effing onwards.”
