Newcastle United’s 1-0 defeat on Saturday, helped make a little bit of history for Arsenal.

That 1-0 scoreline was a repeat of when the North London club visited St James Park earlier in the season, eight times in all the Gooners have beaten Newcastle by that score in the Premier League era.

However, Saturday also saw Arsenal make it their 100th 1-0 win in Premier League history, a fitting tribute to a club who at one time were seen very good but a but boring, leading to their fans turning it into a positive with there ‘1-0 to the Arsenal’ chant.

However, maybe it should have been their London ‘neighbours’ Chelsea singing it, as they are the club to have registered that scoreline the most times since the 1992/93 season.

The official Premier League website have done some analysis and the five clubs who have won 1-0 the most in these twenty three and a half PL seasons are:

115 Chelsea

110 Manchester United

100 Arsenal

88 Everton

85 Aston Villa

They haven’t listed beyond that and so not sure where Newcastle would come…but we aren’t really a 1-0 type of club.

Even under the excellent Sir Bobby Robson and Kevin Keegan, the (relative) success was built on a side focussed to attack, so winning 1-0 wasn’t rarely a game plan.

Then when it came to managers who would look to scrape 1-0 wins such as Allardyce, Dalglish, Pardew and…McClaren, the plan didn’t quite work out.

I was always under the impression that 2-1 was the most likely scoreline in any match but now I’ve found that isn’t the case, at least in the Premier League.

As part of their feature on Arsenal making it 100 x 1-0, the Premier League website also analysed what have been the most common scorelines in all Premier League games that have been played….

1-0 (1689)

2-1 (1376)

2-0 (1149)

1-1 (1081)

0-0 (791)

Would love to know what the breakdown would be for Newcastle United in terms of most popular scoreline, so any budding stattos out there…
