Joey Barton has passed judgement on Newcastle United’s big January signing.
The former United midfielder says that Jonjo Shelvey is the player that Newcastle have ‘been crying out for’.
The lack of creativity, goals and control of the game from the Newcastle central midfielders has been crippling this season.
Any two of Jack Colback, Vurnon Anita and Cheick Tiote have been shown to be nowhere near good enough as a midfield pair.
Jonjo Shelvey instantly changed that on Saturday as his passing and link up play was a world away from what had been seen previously…in fact ever since Yohan Cabaye left, all of two years ago.
In addition to his own contribution, Shelvey also made other players in the team look far better, with Jack Colback maybe top of that list until he was forced out of midfield and into an emergency left-back role due to Dummett’s injury.
Joey Barton says that as well as being a player who can change a game, Jonjo Shelvey also brings ‘passion’ and ’emotion’ to the Newcastle team.
United fans have always responded to that type of player and Joey Barton was just one of those in the past…on his good days.
Let’s hope Shelvey and Newcastle can carry Saturday’s form through into the rest of the season, especially with United dropping back into the bottom three last night.
Joey Barton speaking on BT Sport:
“I think Jonjo Shelvey is the kind of player who would do well at Newcastle.
“He is the kind of player who can be occasionally hot-headed but he plays with a lot of passion, a lot of emotion.
“I think he is a player that Newcastle have been crying out for – somebody who can change a game from midfield.
“It is a good piece of business for them.”
