Yes it is official, Newcastle United’s players are the toughest (least soft) in the Premier League, with Rob Elliot the only player in Newcastle’s starting eleven to wear gloves at the weekend.

Sky Sports looked at all 20 Premier League clubs and found that 31 of the 200 outfield players that started this weekend’s matches were wearing gloves.

Of the 31, only three were English – Wilfried Zaha, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Aaron Lennon.

Five clubs had no outfield players with gloves on but Newcastle ‘won’ because they were playing at the lowest temperature of 2C, sharing the accolade with Liverpool, who also played at 2C and had no players with gloves on as well.

Manchester City were the worst offenders with half their team wearing them against Crystal Palace, with amusingly the once ultimate ‘dogs of war’ Stoke having four of their players now parading in gloves.

Despite playing down south against Spurs, one of the Sunderland players was wearing them despite the temperature being a heady 5C.

Rumours are so far unconfirmed that the Newcastle team had a team bonding session on Saturday night after the West Ham match, by going drinking bare chested down the Diamond Strip….
