Henri Saivet has been talking about what happened in advance of his move to Newcastle United.
Even when Newcastle’s interest became public, it still took a couple of weeks for a deal to be agreed.
Before signing for Newcastle United, Saivet says that he did speak to a couple of people for advice as they had an inside track on the club.
Step forward Gabriel Obertan and Yoan Gouffran.
Henri Saivet knows them both from his days at Bordeaux, having kept in touch particularly with Obertan since their time together in France, and reports that they only had good things to say about the club.
Naturally we all hope that the latest signing from Ligue 1 is going to be one of the good ones but the balance has tipped disastrously the other way, with only Moussa Sissoko a first team regular whilst Marveaux, Gouffran, Cabella, Haidara, Obertan (via four PL starts at Man Utd), Riviere and Thauvin are all liabilities as things stand.
If you accept some players aren’t desperate to play, then why wouldn’t you realise that life is great on Tyneside for players such as Gouffran and Obertan.
Neither of them good enough for the Premier League but still receiving PL wages, they are living the dream and currently seeing their contracts out.
The only viable destination for both of them is a return to France and that is never going to happen unless they take a big hit on wages in return for being able to actually play. Neither have shown any indication that they are interested in doing that…
The tax situation in France means that even if they got the same money as at Newcastle, their take home pay would still be far less.
Gabriel Obertan has six months left on his contract and Yoan Gouffran 18 months, let’s hope that Henri Saivet can buck the trend and we are not having to count down his five and a half year contract any time soon…
“I played with Gabby Obertan and we did around three or four years together, we’ve stayed quite close since.
“I spent three or four seasons with Yoan Gouffran as well at Bordeaux.
“I did speak to them (in advance of the move to Newcastle) and they only ever said good things about Newcastle as a club.”
