Florian Thauvin passes Marseille medical on Sunday morning – Reports

Florian Thauvin flew back to Marseille by private jet on Saturday afternoon, with talks scheduled on his arrival to complete a loan stay for the rest of the season.

Agreement was quickly reached according to widespread reports and now La Provence have confirmed that Florian Thauvin has passed his medical on Sunday morning, with a formal announcement of the deal expected any time now.

The loan deal was delayed so long because Newcastle would only agree to the player returning to Marseille if they didn’t have to pay a penny/cent of his wages.

Having paid out £12m for the player to Marseille, Newcastle understandably found it unacceptable that they should be expected to then subsidise the player’s wages when he was returning to the very same club.

It is a straight loan deal that is being reported, with no trigger for a permanent move if he plays a certain number of games whilst on loan.

Marseille drew 1-1 with Lille on Friday night and are desperate to strengthen their squad for a second half of the season push and so far haven’t brought any new players in during January.

To help make the deal happen, the equally desperate Florian Thauvin is prepared to agree to a major drop in wages so that Marseille can afford him.

The situation made more complicated by the fact that as he has already played for Marseille as well as Newcastle this season, he couldn’t go out to a third club on another loan this season.

There was also news this morning that Seydou Doumbia was claimed to be going through his own medical on Sunday to complete a loan deal to Newcastle.
