Andros Townsend says that he believes that Newcastle United give him the best possible platform to remind people what he is capable of.
The winger was disappointed to leave a club were he had been since the age of eight but after speaking to family, his agent and Tottenham, they all agreed Newcastle was the ‘right club’ for him to go to ‘at this stage in his career’.
Having grown up always playing as a left winger, Spurs then moved him to the right in recent years, but Andros Townsend says he is equally at home on either side.
The public consensus appears to be that he will play on the left and give balance to Sissoko and Janmaat attacking down the right, with Ayoze Perez likely to be the player squeezed out.
Even though he says his only thought is Newcastle United, Townsend concedes that if he plays well for Newcastle then he hopes it will make the difference with England as well.
The player saying that with Jonjo Shelvey, Jack Colback and himself at Newcastle now, there are plenty of reasons for Roy Hodgson to come and watch the team play.
Andros Townsend speaking to the official club website:
“I spoke to my family, spoke to my agent and spoke to Spurs obviously – think they were all in agreement that Newcastle was the right club for me at this stage in my career.
“Last few years I have been out of the Spurs team, important that I got back to playing football and showing people what I am capable of. Newcastle were the best platform for me to do that.
‘Disappointed how it ended at Spurs?’
“Of course it was, I grew up a Spurs fan and I have been at the club since the age of eight. Obviously I planned to spend most of my career at Spurs, so for it to end so disappointingly…I would have hoped for a better exit but that is football and I have to try and build a career here now.”
‘Is it a boost for you to know Steve McClaren has wanted you for so long?’
“Yes of course, it is important for me to have a manager who believes in my abilities and knows the way I play inside out. I have had a few great chats with Steve and he knows what I can do and I know what he wants from me.”
‘What has he told you about your role here?’
“Of course he has just told me that the fans love winners here, get the ball and be direct. He has given me bullet points on my strengths and weaknesses. What he wants from a winger in and out of possession, so I think everything is pretty clear.
“I grew up playing on the left and the last three or four years I have played on the right, so I am comfortable on both sides.”
“To be honest I’m not thinking about England at all, I know that if I am playing well for Newcastle then the England accolades will come with that.
“Jonjo (Shelvey) has been in the last three or four squads and getting a starting place for England, so that is good that he is here as well.
“There is a few of us English boys, Jack Colback as well, so hopefully Roy Hodgson will be down for a few matches and I can impress him.”
