Aleksandar Mitrovic last night gave one of his best performances since arriving at Newcastle, including winning and scoring the vital penalty that levelled the game at 2-2.

The Serbian striker also played a big part in Wijnaldum’s goal that brought Newcastle back into the game just before half-time.

Mitrovic described it as an ‘amazing night’ and said he was ‘very proud’ of his team.

After struggling for goals, it was also a big relief for the striker that he was back on the scoresheet, with it being a month since his last goal (Spurs away) and three months ago when he scored his only previous goal at St James Park against Norwich.

For his penalty, Mitrovic was clearly wrestled to the ground by Smalling but only a fraction of these decisions are given, despite this being a frequent occurrence in every Premier League match these days.

Luckily for Mitrovic and the fans, this one happened very close to the referee and was especially blatant.

As for the St James Park crowd, the former Anderlecht striker says they make you ‘feel like you can do more and win any game’. It would be nice to see that happening in practice and West Ham on Saturday is as good a place as any to start.

Aleksandar Mitrovic talking to the official club website:

“It is a massive result for us, to come from 2-0 down and get back into the game is not easy against a team like Manchester United, but we did it and I’m very proud of the team.

“It was an amazing night. We could have gone on to win the game when it was 2-2 but then they scored and we almost lost it – a draw is the right result and I think both teams can be happy with the point.

“I hadn’t scored in a few games so I wanted to take it, I think it was a penalty, he pulled my shirt in front of the referee and he made the right decision and gave it.

“I was very happy to score, it means a lot for me to score here.

“I always want to score for the fans and they were amazing tonight. We haven’t won in a few games but the crowd were behind the team all game and I want to thank them for that.

“When you get a crowd like this, you feel like you can do more and win any game.

“St. James Park is a special place to play and I’m very happy to be playing here and scoring for this crowd.

“Overall it was a good result for us but we want to be winning games and I think we have a good chance in the next game if we keep playing this way.”
