Alan Shearer has paid tribute to Pavel Srnicek.
Saturday was coincidentally exactly 20 years to the day since Pavel Srnicek kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 win over Arsenal at St James Park.
That game on 2 January 1996 was Pavel’s fourth encounter with Arsenal and brought up four wins out of four!
It was also his third clean sheet in four matches against the gunners.
7 May 1994 Newcastle 2 Arsenal 0
18 September 1994 Arsenal 2 Newcastle 3
19 March 1995 Newcastle 1 Arsenal 0
2 January 1996 Newcastle 2 Arsenal 0
Alan Shearer joined Newcastle at the end of that ‘so close’ 1995/96 season and played alongside Pavel Srnicek for United.
Saturday saw Newcastle unluckily go down 1-0 to Arsenal but it was uplifting to see the whole of the Emirates join in with the minute of applause for Pavel before kick-off.
Both teams wore black armbands out of respect for the Newcastle goalkeeper’s passing, whilst the Newcastle players sported tribute tshirts in the warm up (see below).
This is what Alan Shearer had to say about Pavel Srnicek on Match of The Day on Saturday night:
“He was a very good goalkeeper, he was an unbelievable professional.
“Always on time, worked ever so hard.
“He loved Newcastle and the people of Newcastle, without doubt, loved him.
“A sad loss.”
